Hobbies

A 21-post collection

Friday, Fun New 'Hobby'

I waited until the afternoon when it was allegedly cooler. That was when the neighbour emerged and asked me to prune all the trees away from the fence line. And I can do that because Christmas chainsaw.

Beloved gives me the best toys :D

But, because firkin heat wave, including some of the worst weather Australia has seen, I can only use it in the afternoon. When it cools off a bit.

I will be getting help from Mayhem because there's a LOT of trees and a lot of branches up and down the fence line. As soon as the council offices open, I'll be calling to get a couple of garden waste bins. We will probably trim it down to one after all of the loose branches are taken care of.

As for the AC... services are suspended and we're seeking alternate solutions that don't cost twice my paycheque. The people I contacted were fast and professional but -oh boy- terrifyingly expensive. I can see the logic behind the entire fam cohabiting, given how the costs are going.

It's time to call the council and get that garden waste bin. Daily offerings soon after that.

Challenge #04243-K225: Why? Why Not!

The cloak they wear is made of carefully tanned thick buffalo hide. Upon it, overlapping, are dragon scales. Oddly enough, each scale has a name etched into it. They buy the scales from the dragons, and dragon kin, fairly, one scale per individual, have it signed using a special metal quill, and use these for the cloak.

Why? Because they love all dragons and dragon-kind. And their life's mission is to make a special shrine where the names of them may forever

Challenge #04140-K122: You Want What Why?

A charity asks to get A LOT of the "sweetheart paper". They wish to sell it at a premium in order to fund a program that was building ships to better help smuggle deregger escapees from their polities to safe alliance harbors.

Challenge #04023-K005: Couples Hobby Hour

Lilicoon teaches her best friend, Jay, how to crochet and some of her other hobbies. It's surprisingly useful later on. -- Anon Guest

It was, initially, a good excuse to get cozy together. And Jay would be the last person to admit that they were a little touch-starved. Snuggling in innocent ways with someone as soft and fluffy as Miss Lilicoon was a welcome balm to the wounds Jay kept giving themself.

They shared therapy sessions like that, sometimes.

Challenge #03956-J304: Too Much Like You

They were trying to be more like the ship's human. The ship's human apologized while treating their friend's injury, though at least it was minor. Sad that their friend hurt themselves trying to push it too far. -- DaniAndShali

"I tried to tell you," said Human Otz as she carefully cleansed Orz' injuries. "My fanciest buugengs[1] are sharp. Why didn't you stick with the light plastic ones I printed for you?"

"You warned me that I was not skilled enough. That

Challenge #03870-J218: Time to Stretch

I've been at my job for about two years. The Time is good, but by the POWERS, I'm SO bored! But if I leave my job, where will I go? If I slack off, I'll get fired. Ghads... starting to feel like it did back in the bad place... I'm...SO...BORED! -- DaniAndShali

I am safe in this little corner of the Alliance. My duties are simple, but important, and nothing beyond my means. It's also nothing above my limits. It

Challenge #03764-J111: Flying, BYO Wings

Humans are NUTS! This one bought something called a hang-glider. Are they jumping off that massive cliff with that thing? This is CRAZY! Thank the powers I have wings and can at least follow! -- Anon Guest

Humans cannot fly on their own. This is known. This does not, however, stop them from slipping the surly bonds of gravity by any other means.

This one was a giant kite. Aluminium tubes, brightly-coloured silk, and very little else. There was a sling attached

Challenge #03018-H095: Time and Effort

A: Can I borrow a knife?

B: What do you need it for?

A: What do you mean?

B: What you need it for will determine which one I give you.

A: How many knives do you have?!?

B: What do you need a knife for? -- FightingFit

"No, no, no," said Human Arin. "I gotta go down this rabbit hole. How many knives do you own?"

"One for every purpose and then some," dismissed Human Bob. "I have a collection."

"That's

Challenge #02982-H059: It Comes to Life

Oh Flakk! Those idiots were out on a run - Traction Engines, rolling roadblocks, every damn dog in the district went crazy. Every small child fell instantly in Love with them. -- Knitnan

No matter how far science progresses, there are still pockets of obscure weirdos who go old school. It should not be shocking that many of those weirdos are Humans. Some of them crave a fictional past that misses out on all the yucky bits associated with the era in

Challenge #02950-H027: For Art's Sake

They were a rough and ready, "come at me" space marine. They had seen quite a few battles and had the scars to prove it, and won them all. They'd also worked with dozens of races from the roughest deathworlders to the gentlest havenworlders, the perfect person you wanted aboard ship when exploring out on the edge. Yet, each meal break, if they had few other duties, they were unusually quiet. When they moved into their quarters, other than the tools of

Challenge #02915-G358: A Super-effective Tactic

The ship had a room labeled "dedicated deathworlder hobby location". For some time, this was considered to be sufficient. Then, they got a second deathworlder...and after the third time both deathworlders had to report to medical due to crafting tool related injuries stemming from frustration spawned combat with regards to shared airspace causing one project to be ruined by the airborne particulate from another project, well...

Something had to be done. -- Anon Guest

Challenge #02882-G325: Forging ahead

The human was highly recommended by everyone the crew asked when it came to being a security officer. They were diligent, highly intelligent, made friends easily, in fact many of the crew still talked to them from time to time. The only caveat tended to be, they didn't want normal crew quarters to sleep in, they always asked for a storage bay. Why? Well, they collected blades. But not all blades, only unique ones. But that wasn't the only reason.

I decided

Challenge #02792-G235: Welcome to the League of Superlative Artifice

I liked the story about the Asian chef, who quickly made dinner from the would-be invaders.

I wonder what other adventures she and her crew would have?

Maybe their own version of a "beach episode"? Or perhaps the crew learn about a hobby she has, that she kept secret because she was embarrassed? Or maybe a new crew member arrives (he's a human too) and a love story arises?

P.S.

I really enjoy every story you wrote :D -- Tom

Challenge #02751-G194: You and Your Hobbies

The human got a job at a rather busy space station as an IT person and as a structural engineer. They did a lot of work with computers and with keeping up maintenance on this place. But when they signed the contract, they had an unusual clause, one that, it was discovered, they always asked for no matter what place they worked. Their quarters must be at least twice to three times the size of normal crew quarters. This was not too
