Challenge #00889-B158: Nonse

With the amount of sense the last few hours have not made, I’m tempted to believe that this is all a simulation someone or something built into the universe for people foolish enough to have attempted what I did…

[AN: I am having intense internet trouble at the mome so I’m giving this to you from my phone. Forgive the lack of the usual formatting]

The trees were gathering water and farming people.

This… this was wrong. The sky was the colour of earth and the earth itself was blue. And… slightly marshy? But it was dry. A dry and supple sponge that nevertheless conspired to squelch.

A triffid on its leash was hissing at her. It looked exactly like the ridiculous rubber monsters of the movie. She guarded her eyes, just in case, and stumbled onwards down the soggy road.

One tree-child, naked as a jay, ran screaming from her. Yelling what sounded like, “Groot! Groot!” to the others.

She was out of range of the hissing triffid, at least. Shayde looked the lead tree squarely in its… face? and carefully, slowly, assumed a position of surrender.

Fingers interlaced and hands on top of her head. Kneeling in the squishy ground with her ankles crossed.

And, because she was two heartbeats away from messing what was left of her clothes, Shayde did the one thing that always helped her calm down.

She sang.

“Picture yourself on a boat on a river… with tangerine trees and marmalade skies… Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly. A girl with kaleidoscope eyes…”

She peeked. Okay. This was good. They weren’t exactly aiming their weapons at her. But they were approaching with caution.

This was not the time to grin and show her sharp teeth. This was a time for staying very still and not doing anything at all threatening.

“Fimbalism finger fink,” the leader demanded. “Krelborn groot lalama!”

“Rapacious radishes,” she replied, and almost kicked herself. “Look. You cannae understand me. I cannae understand you. Mebbe a wee bit o’ pantomime?”

“Sconculous! Erid flelow carnarvon?”

Shayde sighed. This was going to be a long day. “Would ye believe, I’m mostly harmless?”

Hey science side if Tumblr. . why is the full moon orange sometimes?

Rephrase
What does it mean?
Bad weather is coming?
Humidity?

If it’s close to the horizon when it appears orange then you are likely seeing it through a haze of smoke normally invisible to the human eye.

Orange and yellow moons can be an indicator of atmospheric pollution

queer-werewolf:

autistic pride is so important because autistic children like myself are constantly treated as and made to feel like burdens to their loved ones, their family, and even society as a whole.

we literally get people saying things like “if i was autistic, i would kill myself” and caretakers who get sympathy for wanting to kill autistic kids. people will justify our existence only by how productive we are and how neurotypical we can appear. when parents find out their kid

Have there ever been cases where, through some sort of miscommunication or other "clerical error", a cogniscent race (either collectively or...

Do humans count?

Heheh. Um. There are times when the species are very vastly different that understanding and communication are virtually impossible.

The jury is very much out on the Hyperspace-native species known through onomatopoeic nomenclature as the Xyrak’l. Nobody knows if they’re cogniscent, cusp-cogniscent, or non-cogniscent.

But they are big enough to crush a standard passenger liner, so the general consensus is to leave them to their own business.

And then there’s the vary rare cases where a

How diverse are the psychologies of the various sophont species? Do you have large-clutch species that don't really care for individual...

TBH, that is something I am going to explore as I go on in the Amalgam Universe series.

Most cogniscent life would depend on an extended childhood for learning. This leads to a need for nurturing, which means more effort spent on fewer young.

Cogniscents who have litters would be rare. And possibly level 5 Deathworlders.

Civilisation also, to some degree, requires an element of co-operation to progress. You need a certain amount of trade and specialisation to get into space. Naturally

Official and unoffical stance on transsophontism? What about for differently-abled, to allow them to function, like something for autistes...

The differently-abled, so long as they are known to be of a cogniscent species, are afforded the same rights as other cogniscents.

Those rights include:

  • The right to shelter
  • The right to safety
  • The right to proper nutrition
  • The right to comfort
  • The right to gainful employ according to abilities
  • The right to choose what aids are used to help attain the other rights

It’s when the individual is of an unknown species that the real problems start.

Official and unoffical stance on gengineering? Tukka-tukka seems to say approved of, but what about on animals and sophonts? What about...

Gengineering is generally approved in all quality-of-life improvements. Tukkatukka, being a foodstuff designed to aid terraforming, is in the definitive green tick zone.

Augments are definite grey areas. They fall loosely under the category of service animals and the CRC keeps a rigid check on their welfare.

Engineered Life Forms, or ELFs, who exhibit cogniscence are the ones who cause trouble. Companies who make them are considered responsible for their welfare and upkeep.

Huge amounts of paperwork are required. The CRC has

Official and unofficial stance on AIs? Including those that don't have a handy appealing sophont-shaped body, but are rather something...

The Cogniscents’ Rights Committee has the relatively simple stance that if an intelligence can seem like an intelligence to another known intelligence, then the original intelligence deserves all rights and freedoms afforded to cogniscent life.

Signs of intelligence include:

  • arguing
  • making wishes known
  • attempts at communication
  • attempts at trade
  • mimicry with the goal of attempted communication
  • attempts at understanding

Of course, there are cusp-cogniscent creatures like the Grey Parrot, the pig, and some species of ape. The CRC prefers to err on
