“Don’t make me go away?” – by me
I love Derpy. I love her even more now that she’s had a few lines in the show. Now, some folks seem to think that Derpy and her portrayal is “ableist”. I think it’s quite the opposite.
There are kids out there who have learning difficulties. They are going to have to deal with people like Rainbow Dash who don’t have or won’t take the time to explain things to them. Who blow up in rage at them for (seemingly, to the kid) no reason.
As far as Derpy was concerned, for that one [now controversial] scene, she was just playing with a lightning cloud. Having fun. And then everything went wrong, somehow.
Derpy could so easily become a hero for kids with learning disabilities, and for kids with mental disabilities. But only if she’s allowed to stay on screen. If she’s taken off by a group of easily-offended squeaky wheels [Yes, I’m looking at you, Yamino. Is your kind-hearted, clumsy ditz the only one allowed around, or something?] then we never will have that chance.
Give Hasbro and co. the chance to redeem themselves with more positive portrayals of Derpy.
They gave Derpy her name and her voice because we, as Bronies, Pegasisters and fans, kept bloody asking for it. What right have we to be up in arms because we got what we asked for?
